A:  In order to repair corrupted or missing default content, follow these steps:

1] Exit RailWorks? and then Exit Steam
2] Start Steam again
3] Select the ‘My Games’ tab
4] Right Click on ‘RailWorks’ and select properties from the menu that appears
5] Select the ‘Local Files’ tab
6] Click on ‘Verify integrity of game cache…’
7] Once complete, close the Properties window
8] Any required content will then be re-downloaded
9] Once listed as 100% Ready, you can start RailWorks? again

A:  The Packager is part of the RSDevTools. These can be downloaded from the RailSim Support page on the official website.

A:  For initial release, RailWorks? has been specifically created in English only. The reason for this is due to the sheer complexity of railway subject matter and the resources required for translating this product.

RailSimulator?.com will be running a rolling schedule of language releases to ensure that each one is correct and tested before being made available. This rolling programme will start with a German translation, and extend to other popular languages over time.

A:  There is currently no specific drivers for operating RailDriver? with RailWorks?, however it is possible to adapt the Rail Simulator drivers to be compatible.

It is advised to wait for official RailWorks? drivers from www.raildriver.com

If you wish to ‘adapt’ your Rail Simulator setup* to run the RailDriver? in RailWorks?, follow these steps:

1] Navigate to this folder: C:\Program Files\PI Engineering\RailDriver MWII\XKeyDevices\Vid05F3Pid00D2
2] Open Report Config.txt in Notepad
3] Scroll to the bottom and look for this line: module plugins\RailDriver.dll
4] Change it to: module C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\railworks\plugins\RailDriver.dll
5] Save the file
6] Launch the RailDriver? and then RailWorks? and use as normal.

• Please note, this method is not guaranteed to provide functionality.

A:  This error occurs when graphics hardware does not meet the minimum requirement of supporting Pixel Shader 2.0 technology.

If you find that your hardware does support Pixel Shader 2.0, please ensure you have the very latest graphics drivers. These can be obtained from the hardware manufacturers such as nVidia and ATI AMD

A:  This error occurs when a file has become corrupted after editing it. This can happen if the game crashes when saving and the changes are not saved properly.

To resolve the issue, a backup of the route should be reinstated by first deleting the corrupted version and then installing the Backup via the Package Manager.

A:  Yes. Steam is required by RailWorks? (digital download and DVD versions). This is for the initial activation process and then to provide users with updates and new features seamlessly when they become available.

It is possible however to operate RailWorks? in 'Offline Mode' which does not require internet access. Details on activating this mode can be found at www.railsimulator.com/support

A:  You can install RailWorks? on any computer that you install Steam and your Account to. There are no limitations on the number of times RailWorks? can be installed on any machine.

However, as you are required to login into Steam to play RailWorks?, you cannot run multiple copies at the same time.

A:  What is Offline Mode?

Offline Mode allows you to play games through Steam without reconnecting to the Steam Network every time you wish to play - this is particularly useful if you do not plan on playing over the internet and would prefer not to download new updates for your single-player games.

IMPORTANT
The Steam client application's files must be updated to allow for the use of Offline Mode. If your game's status is "100% - Ready" but you receive the message "This game cannot be started in Offline Mode" when attempting to play offline, the Steam client application's files need to be updated.

Firewall settings preventing Steam from updating itself are the most common cause for this problem. Please see the Troubleshooting Network Connectivity topic for instructions to configure your network so Steam may update if you encounter any difficulties with Offline Mode.

A:  You must connect to the Steam Network at least once to setup your account, verify and test Rail Simulator 2: RailWorks? and configure Offline Mode on your machine.

According to official information, there is no requirement to re-connect to Steam ever again, unless a problem is encountered.

A:  Yes. Any Rail Simulator content in RPK (RailSim Package) format can be installed directly using the Package Manager tab in the RailWorks? Launch window.

The RailWorks? Package Manager also caters for content supplied in EXE/INSTALLER format. To install the addons, navigate to the Package Manager tab of the RailWorks? launch screen and select 'Install Legacy Rail Simulator Addon' and follow the on-screen instructions.

A:  If RailWorks? freezes or returns to the desktop when you click on a train in any Free Roam or Standard Scenario, this indicates that the physics system is not properly installed.

To rectify this problem, navigate to this folder:
C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\railworks\Install

Within this folder is PhysX_6.10.25_SystemSoftware.exe

Run this setup to re-install PhysX >> the physics system used by RailWorks?.

nVidia Users

A:  It can be difficult to pin-point erroneous application crashes, but Steam Support does provide some trouble shooting tips on working to resolve them from occuring.

Trouble Shooting Frequent Game Crashes

A:  Please ensure you are running the very latest drivers for your graphics hardware. These can be found on the manufacturers website such as nVidia and ATI AMD.

If installing the latest drivers for your graphics hardware does not resolve the issue, please check that it is above the minimum spec required by RailWorks?. This can be found at www.railsimulator.com/support

A:  No. RailWorks? is a completely new software title and does not interact with Rail Simulator in any way. Both applications can be installed on the same PC and neither will affect or be affected by the precense of the other.

A:  RailWorks? requires several key elements in order to operate. If one of these elements is missing or unavailable it will fail to operate. To ensure RailWorks? has everything it needs in order to run, please check the following details.

1] Verify the integrity your game cache (See Question 1 of the General FAQ for details)
2] Ensure you have the correct DirectX version installed by runnin ght e DXSETUP.exe located here: C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\railworks\Install\DirectX9
3] Upgrade Microsoft .NET to Version 3.5 (Vista features .NET 3.5 by default)
4] nVidia graphics card users can install a specific version of PhysX. You must uninstall the current one before doing so.
5] Ensure you run RailWorks? as Administrator on your computer. You can do this by closing the Steam Client completely and start it by right clicking the Steam icon and selecting 'Run As...Administrator'.

Note - The above methods may cause RailWorks? to crash the first time you press 'Start RailWorks' but it will runs fine after this.

A:  RailWorks? is installed by Steam and is located under the Steam installed directory here: ...\Steam\steamapps\common\railworks

A:  The official www.railsimulator.com shop is currently undergoing maintenance to bring it inline with the rest of the RailWorks? website.

Until then, the official addons for Rail Simulator can be purchased from the eLicense Online Store.

A:  Rail Simulator 2: RailWorks? has been tested on the following Operating Systems:

• XP Home (32|64)
• XP Professional (32|64)
• XP Media Center
• Vista Home Basic (32|64)
• Vista Home Premium (32|64)
• Vista Ultimate (32|64)

A:  RailSimulator?.com are not currently taking stock of user suggested new feature requests while the official website is still being developed. More information on this will be made available soon. 18/06/2009

A:  Windows Vista Users

1] Exit from Steam.
2] Go to C:\Program Files\Steam\ (or your default Steam location).
3] Right click the Steam.exe and choose "Run as Administrator" to launch Steam.

The option may not work with a Desktop shortcut to Steam so be sure to use the direct Steam.exe.

This process is not permanent. If this corrects your issue, you can continue to launch Steam with this process or upgrade your Windows User account to Administrator status.

Troubleshooting Steps

1] Exit and restart Steam
2] If the issue persists, exit Steam and rename the ClientRegistry?.blob and restart Steam

3] If renaming the ClientRegistry?.blob file does not resolve the issue, please exit Steam and delete everything under the Steam installation directory except Steam.exe, the ClientRegistryOld.blob, and the /SteamApps folder - this will force Steam to update when you log in

4] If the issue persists, please see question 1 on Verifying Game Cache Files for instructions to repair your game cache files.

5] If the issue persists, please try launching the gRailWorks.exe directly from its installation folder: C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\railworks. You may also try RailWorksProc?.exe in the game folder to see if a different error message is found.

6] This error could also be caused by having certain Steam files set to Read Only. To resolve this:

• Exit Steam.
• Navigate to the directory where you installed Steam. (Typically C:\Program Files\ or C:\Program Files\Valve\.)
• Right-click on the Steam folder.
• Select Properties.
• Check the Read-Only? checkbox and press Apply.
• Uncheck the Read-Only? checkbox and press Apply.

7] Double-check your router configuration to make sure that it is properly configured for Steam. If bypassing the router by connecting directly to your Cable/DSL modem allows the game to work correctly, then please consult the Using a Router with Steam topic for more detailed instructions on configuring your router.

Data Execution Prevention

1] Go to Start > Control Panel > System > Advanced > Performance > Data Execution Prevention.
2] Select "Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select:"
3] Select "Add", navigate to C:\Program Files\Steam (or your default Steam directory), and add Steam.exe to the exception list.
4] Additionally, you will want to add RailWorks?.exe. This is located in Steam\steamapps\common\railworks

A:  All the official free downloads for Rail Simulator are now included directly with RailWorks?.

A:  If you experience this error when trying to test the display settings of RailWorks?, or when attempting to run RailWorks?, please follow these instructions:

1] Navigate to C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\railworks\Install\DirectX9
2] Double Click on DXSETUP.exe
3] Follow any instructions to complete the installation

A:  Steam is used to automatically keep RailWorks? updated to the latest available version. To do this RS.com provide a list of all default RailWorks? files to Steam. When an update is issued by RS.com, Steam looks at the files it knows about, then at those same files on the user machine, and updates the users version to ensure they match.

This means, if users alter any default files, they will no longer be the same as the version on Steam and, even if these files are not specifically changed by the new update, Steam will revert them to match how RS.com expect them to be.

Steam cannot delete or change any files it does not know about.

A:  There is no user login required to access the information provided on the RailWorks? Developer/FAQ Wiki.

A:  In order to use multiple monitors with RailWorks?, you will need to set your dekstop to 'Horizontal Span' instead of Dual Desktop.

This is achieved by following these steps:

1] Right click on the Desktop Background and select 'Properties'
2] Select the Settings Tab and then click the Advanced button at the bottom
3] Click the tab named after your graphics hardware
4] Choose 'Display Settings' and then select 'Display Mode'
5] Change 'Dual View' to 'Horizontal Span'

This now creates one large desktop across all connected monitors. You can now select and test larger desktop resolutions for use in RailWorks?.
